From the Center for Responsible Forestry (CRF):
Dear Forest Friends, We need your help to protect our mature forests! Last year community action resulted in the pause or canceling of 13 timber sales. We need your help to ensure that the most ecologically important forests currently on the chopping block are put into conservation. Here are 4 easy actions you can take to stop critical timber sales in Thurston, Clallam, Pierce, and Kitsap counties!
The “Carrot” and “Cabbage Patch” timber sales within Capitol Forest are under threat of being auctioned off to the highest bidder by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for clearcut logging on February 27th. These forests are vital for wildlife habitat, water quality, climate resilience, and biodiversity. Take 1 minute to send a pre-written email to members of the Board of Natural Resources, urging them to save the “Carrot” and “Cabbage Patch” forests from clearcut logging.
Following last month’s announcement of 2,000 acres the DNR is designating for conservation, The Power Plant timber sale was canceled! While this is great news for Clallam County, there is still advocacy to be done to protect mature forests from being clear cut in the Elwha watershed, including the“TCB23” timber sale. That’s why we need you to write to Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz expressing your gratitude for Power Plant being canceled and asking her to continue to work on solutions that will protect all mature forest in the Elwha watershed.
Railroad Creek is a popular recreation area that contains the Elbe Hills trailhead and is just south of the Elbe Hills ORV Area Campground. Preserving mature forests in this fish-bearing tributary of the Nisqually River watershed is important for decreasing the risks of flooding downstream, keeping stream temperatures cool, and ensuring year round flow. Please join us in telling Pierce County Council to advocate for this mature forests to be conserved.
Breaking Bud is a timber sale with 70 acres of mature forest in Kitsap County’s Green Mountain State Forest and the Tahuya watershed. DNR has an open comment period for this sale through January 10th. Please take 1 minute to send a pre-written comment to DNR urging them to remove unit 1 from Breaking Bud.
Our mature forests are worth saving, and your support can make a difference. Please take a moment to send these comments, and please share it with 5 friends and family members. Let’s work together to protect our natural treasures and ensure a sustainable future for our forests! With gratitude, The Center for Responsible Forestry
